If you’ve ever walked away from therapy feeling discouraged, you’re not alone. Many people try therapy at one point in their lives and don’t feel the change they hoped for. Maybe it felt like the sessions didn’t go deep enough, or you couldn’t find the right therapist. Maybe the symptoms felt too heavy to lift with talk alone. Whatever the reason, it’s okay. Healing takes time, and sometimes it takes trying again with the right support and new tools to help you get there.
At Montana Psychiatry, we believe it’s never too late to start again. Dr. Amato recently spoke at the Beyond Medication Continuing Education event, encouraging both professionals and clients to see therapy through a new lens. He reminded everyone that modern mental health care offers many ways to enhance your healing journey. You no longer have to rely on one single approach. With treatments like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Ketamine therapy, therapy can feel more effective and more hopeful than ever before.
The Power of Trying Again
When life feels overwhelming, it can be hard to believe that things can change. But therapy is not about perfection. It’s about progress. It’s about finding the courage to face your emotions, understand your patterns, and begin again. Even if therapy didn’t help you in the past, it can help you now because you are not the same person you were then.
Your experiences, your brain chemistry, and your understanding of yourself continue to evolve. And so does mental health care. Dr. Amato and our team want you to know that there are new, evidence-based ways to help your mind respond better to therapy.
How TMS Therapy Supports Healing
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. For people struggling with depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders, these areas can become underactive. TMS helps awaken those regions, improving communication between brain cells and lifting symptoms over time.
TMS doesn’t require medication, and most people experience little to no side effects. Many find that as their mood begins to improve, they can engage more deeply in therapy. It can feel as if the fog starts to lift and the skills learned in therapy become easier to apply. You might notice that it’s easier to stay motivated, to feel emotions without shutting down, and to trust the process of healing again.
TMS does not replace therapy. It enhances it. Think of it as clearing the path so your mind can better receive and process the insights that therapy offers.
How Ketamine Therapy Helps Break Through Stuck Points
Ketamine therapy offers another path toward healing when traditional treatments haven’t worked. Originally developed as an anesthetic, Ketamine is now used in low doses to treat depression, PTSD, and anxiety. It works differently than antidepressants by rapidly increasing the growth of new neural connections in the brain.
This reset effect can help people feel relief faster and can open emotional doors that once felt closed. Many patients say that after Ketamine treatment, they can finally talk about experiences or emotions that once felt too painful to approach in therapy.
At Montana Psychiatry, we offer Ketamine-assisted therapy in a safe, supportive environment. The combination of medicine and guidance allows clients to process emotions with clarity and compassion. When used together, therapy and Ketamine create a bridge between the emotional and the biological sides of healing.
The Importance of Whole Person Care
Dr. Amato often reminds his patients that mental health is not one size fits all. Each person’s path to wellness is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. That’s why our team focuses on whole person care that addresses the brain, body, and mind together.
For some, this means combining talk therapy with TMS. For others, it means adding Ketamine sessions to help the brain reconnect and reengage. And for many, it means giving therapy another chance with new tools that make the process more meaningful and effective.
Healing is not just about feeling better. It’s about learning to live fully again. It’s about reconnecting with your purpose, your relationships, and yourself.
Don’t Give Up. There Is Always a Way Forward.
It takes courage to try again. If you’ve struggled with treatment in the past, it’s understandable to feel hesitant. But remember, you are not starting from zero. Every experience, every attempt, and every moment of effort has brought you closer to understanding what you need.
Dr. Amato’s message at Beyond Medication was simple but powerful. Don’t give up. There are so many options today that can support your healing journey. Whether it’s TMS, Ketamine therapy, or a new therapist who understands your story, help is within reach.
If you’re ready to take that step, Montana Psychiatry is here to walk with you. We’ll meet you where you are with compassion, science-backed care, and a deep belief in your capacity to heal.
You deserve to feel better. You deserve a team that believes in you, even when you’re unsure. This could be the moment when therapy finally works because this time, you won’t walk it alone.

Category: generalThe hoops I jumped through in order to be evaluated were straightforward and efficient. I met with PA Kaitlin for about an hour to discuss my history and previous medications. Then Dr. Amato joined us to further discuss my history, the TMS treatment, and answer any questions. Myrna gathered all of the information and submitted it to my health insurance company to request coverage for TMS. Fortunately, insurance approved the treatment and I was able to begin the next week. I’m sure most people have anxiety about starting a treatment like TMS. No matter how many times it’s described to you, there are many unknowns. How will I feel during treatment? Is it painful? What if this doesn’t work? What if it works for a while but then stops? In all honesty, I was very uncomfortable during the first couple of weeks of treatment. The alternating two seconds of tapping sensation caused some pain during treatment, and at the end of the first week I thought about quitting. But I had sworn to myself that TMS was a last resort and I HAD TO complete the treatment and give it a chance to work. My technician, Heather, told me that some people don’t feel the tapping at all, they only hear it. Guess I wasn’t one of those people! But as the days went by, it became easier to tolerate the treatments. During this time I also saw Lauren weekly for CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). This is highly recommended for people undergoing TMS treatment, and it was a positive complement to my total of 100 minutes each week “under the helmet”. The weekend between weeks three and four, I started to notice subtle improvements in my mood, increased belief in my self-worth, and enthusiasm for simple things like going for walks, meeting friends for lunch, and taking on volunteer work in the community. I hesitated at first to believe that TMS was helping me. I was afraid that I was convincing myself it was working because I so desperately wanted it to! But now that I am past the treatment I can say with cert

Category: generalI feel so blessed to participate in the TMS protocol at MT Psychiatry. After struggling so many years with depression and not getting significant results from medication, particularly of late, I noticed positive results in the first two weeks of treatment. TMS can literally give you back the beauty & joy in living as well as the courage to make positive life changes and improvements in your daily living situation. I heartily encourage anyone to put yourself into the hands of the amazing TMS team who so gently and graciously make this journey with you out of the black hole that is depression. It is my honor and privilege to give the TMS treatment the highest recommendation.

Category: generalNot realizing how fuzzy my head was, I thought I was only going through severe anxiety and depression. Through the insight of Pat, I was able to go through TMS treatments which brought down the anxiety and depression immensely and has cleared up the fuzzy, far off substantially. All the personnel treated me with kindness and I’m sure their attitudes helped in my recovery.

Category: generalThe first outcome of TMS I noted happened early in my treatment, at about the beginning of week two. I felt as though my “brain fog” had been chipped away. I wish I could report that I feel my mental health issues are in “remission”, but I can’t do so yet. My hope is that I will see improvement in the weeks to come, now that my TMS cycle has ended. I can say that my brain feels – in some way – different; I can’t explain exactly how. I continue to struggle at this point in time but sill have hope for more improvement.
