TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Depression is one of the most common mental health illnesses in the country. While some people may find that traditional methods of treating depression like psychotherapy or medication have been effective, others may require a different approach. Montana Psychiatry and Brain Health Center offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as an integrative treatment option to help treat depressive disorders and improve your quality of living.

At Montana Psychiatry and Brain Health Center, we offer innovative, cutting-edge treatments for many mental health conditions. Our medical personnel are experts in the specialized approaches they take. Contact us today to schedule a consultation appointment and find out how we can help you be well.

What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive approach to treat depressive disorders when other modes of treatment weren’t as effective. This cutting-edge treatment can improve symptoms of depression by using magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.

How does TMS work?

As the TMS treatment begins, the electromagnetic coil, which is encased in a comfortable helmet, is placed on the patient’s head, near the forehead. A magnetic pulse is painlessly distributed from the electromagnetic to vitalize the nerve cells in the brain involved in mood control and in turn, depression. It can also stimulate areas of the brain that have reduced activity as a result of depression. Consult with our medical experts to determine if TMS treatment may be right for you.

What can I expect?

For optimal results, TMS requires a series of treatment sessions. Typically, patients get five treatments per week over a period of four to six weeks. Prior to treatment, our medical experts will examine you and determine where best to place the magnets on your head as well as the appropriate dose of magnetic energy for you. The first treatment session usually can last around an hour.

What are the results like for TMS?

Every patient’s body chemistry is different and as such, results will differ from person to person. TMS may be able to alleviate your symptoms of depression or help them disappear entirely. Typically, relieving depressive disorder symptoms may take several weeks of treatment sessions.

TMS may work better for you if you:

  • Have tried electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and noticed an improvement in your symptoms
  • Do not experience detachment from reality from your mental illness
  • Have not experienced several years of chronic depression

If traditional treatment approaches haven’t improved your depression, TMS is a treatment option to consider. If you or someone you know is struggling with a depressive disorder, Montana Psychiatry and Brain Health Center offers TMS as an integrative, cutting-edge approach that can improve depression and quality of life. Contact us today to schedule a consultation appointment and find out if TMS may be the right procedure for you.
