Deciding to try a new treatment for depression is a big step. If you’ve already tried medications without getting the relief you hoped for, it’s completely normal to have questions. The more you understand about SPRAVATO® therapy, the more confident you’ll feel when deciding if it’s the right choice for you.

We’ve put together 10 questions to bring to your appointment. These questions can help you have an open conversation with your provider and better understand what to expect before starting treatment.

1. Am I a good candidate for SPRAVATO® therapy?

Not everyone with depression needs SPRAVATO®, and that’s okay. Your provider will look at your symptoms, your treatment history, and your overall health to decide if it’s a good fit. If you’ve tried two or more antidepressants without enough relief, this treatment may be worth discussing.

2. How does SPRAVATO® work differently than antidepressants?

Most antidepressants work on chemicals like serotonin. SPRAVATO® works on a different pathway in the brain called glutamate, which plays an important role in learning, memory, and mood.

Many people like knowing they’re trying a different approach instead of another medication that works the same way as the ones they’ve already tried.

3. What happens during a SPRAVATO® appointment?

Knowing what to expect can ease a lot of anxiety.

During your appointment, you’ll self-administer the nasal spray under the supervision of your care team. After treatment, you’ll relax in our office while we monitor you for about two hours to make sure you’re feeling well before you head home.

Our team stays with you throughout the process, answers your questions, and helps you feel as comfortable as possible.

4. How often will I need treatment?

SPRAVATO® isn’t a one-time treatment.

Most people begin with two appointments each week for the first month. After that, many patients transition to less frequent treatments based on how they’re feeling and how they’re responding.

We’ll create a schedule that works with your treatment plan and adjust it as needed.

5. What side effects should I expect?

Every treatment has possible side effects, and it’s important to understand them before you begin.

Some people feel sleepy, dizzy, disconnected, or experience mild nausea after treatment. These effects usually wear off before you leave the office, which is why we monitor you throughout your visit.

We’ll explain what to expect and answer any concerns before your first appointment.

6. How long does it take before people notice a difference?

This is one of the questions we hear most often.

Some people notice changes within the first few treatments. Others improve more gradually over several weeks. Everyone responds differently, so we focus on your progress instead of comparing it to someone else’s experience.

7. Will I stop taking my antidepressant?

Not always.

Most people continue taking their prescribed antidepressant while receiving SPRAVATO®. Your provider will explain exactly what medications you should continue and whether any changes make sense for your situation.

Never stop or change medication without talking with your provider first.

8. How will you know if SPRAVATO® is working?

Progress doesn’t always happen overnight.

Sometimes people notice they have more energy before they notice their mood improving. Others sleep better, feel more motivated, or begin enjoying activities they had stopped doing.

We’ll check in regularly to track your symptoms and celebrate even the small improvements along the way.

9. Will my insurance cover SPRAVATO®?

Many insurance plans cover SPRAVATO® for people who meet certain requirements.

Before treatment begins, our team works with your insurance company to verify your benefits and explain any out-of-pocket costs. We want you to understand your coverage before you start.
