Psychiatric Physician Assistant

Hilary Nelson is a dedicated Physician Assistant who believes that mental health is the essential foundation of a patient’s overall well-being. A Helena native, Hilary combines a rigorous scientific background with a compassionate, patient-first approach. By focusing on the critical link between physical health and psychiatric stability, she provides the Billings community with comprehensive, evidence-based care designed to foster long-term resilience and recovery.

Hilary earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Whitman College before returning to Montana in 2015. Her path to psychiatry was shaped by three years as a medical assistant in Family Practice, where she saw firsthand how untreated mental health challenges can impact every aspect of a person’s life. She went on to earn her Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies from Rocky Mountain College, joining the team at Montana Psychiatry in 2022.

Hilary Nelson

A Multidisciplinary Clinical Foundation

Hilary’s experience in Family Practice gives her a unique advantage in the psychiatric field. She understands the "whole-patient" journey, recognizing that mental wellness is often intertwined with physical health and lifestyle factors. This multidisciplinary perspective allows her to create treatment plans that are medically sound and highly personalized, addressing the root causes of distress rather than just the symptoms.

Advanced Psychiatric Mastery

During her clinical training, Hilary was introduced to the innovative work at Montana Psychiatry and Brain Health Center, where she developed a passion for advanced interventional treatments. Her commitment to clinical excellence is reflected in her Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Psychiatry, a prestigious honor that marks her as an expert in the field. She utilizes this specialized knowledge to provide high-quality care to those navigating the most difficult mental health struggles.

Helena Roots & Outdoor Spirit

A true Montanan, Hilary is driven by a desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of her neighbors. Her dedication to the community is matched only by her love for the Montana landscape. Outside of the clinic, she stays active and grounded by embracing the outdoors—whether she is hiking, skiing, or trail running through the mountains with her dog, Fin. This connection to nature informs her belief in the restorative power of a balanced, active lifestyle for mental wellness.
