TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)

At Montana Psychiatry, we know that when traditional treatments for depression or OCD haven’t provided the relief you deserve, it can feel like you’ve hit a wall. But your journey toward wellness shouldn’t have to stall. That’s why we offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in Billings, Bozeman, and across Montana—a non-invasive, FDA-cleared therapy designed for those seeking a different path to mental clarity and emotional stability.

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Each patient receives a personalized TMS protocol designed to target the specific areas of the brain responsible for mood regulation. Our clinicians provide a supportive, comfortable environment where we monitor your progress and adjust your treatment to help you achieve the best outcomes and rediscover a life that feels like yours again.

TMS Therapy

TMS Therapy can help you:

  • Relieve treatment-resistant depression
  • Restore mental energy and motivation
  • Achieve long-term remission
  • Regulate brain activity
  • Quiet the symptoms of OCD or anxiety

If you’re looking for a non-invasive, drug-free path to feeling like yourself again, our specialists can determine if TMS is the right fit for you.

What Is TMS Therapy?

Transcranial Magnetic Therapy (TMS) is a safe, clinically proven, and effective treatment for depression conveniently provided in an outpatient setting without the need for anesthesia or hospitalization. TMS offers a medication-free, non-invasive treatment option for major depression in patients who have not found relief from medication or therapy.

How does TMS work?

TMS delivers gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate underactive nerve cells in the parts of the brain that control mood. This innovative treatment targets the brain’s neural pathways involved in mood regulation by delivering magnetic pulses to specific brain areas. These pulses stimulate nerve cells, promoting increased activity in regions associated with mood regulation. Throughout several sessions, typically conducted over a few weeks, TMS therapy gradually reshapes neural connectivity, alleviating depressive symptoms.

Unlike traditional treatments, such as medication, TMS therapy is non-invasive and devoid of systemic side effects. Many people report substantial improvements in mood, energy levels, and overall well-being following a course of TMS therapy.

What can I expect?

For optimal results, TMS requires a series of treatment sessions. Typically, patients get five treatments per week over four to six weeks. Prior to treatment, our medical experts will examine you and determine where best to place the magnets on your head and the appropriate dose of magnetic energy for you. The first treatment session usually lasts around an hour.

TMS may work better for you if you:

  • Have you tried electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and noticed an improvement in your symptoms
  • Do not experience detachment from reality from your mental illness
  • Have not experienced several years of chronic depression

What are the results like for TMS?

Every patient’s body chemistry is different; results will differ from person to person. TMS may be able to alleviate your symptoms of depression or help them disappear entirely. Typically, relieving depressive disorder symptoms may take several weeks of treatment sessions.

What We Treat

Depression

We help people living with major depression and similar conditions by pairing carefully chosen medications with ongoing support. The right antidepressants can ease persistent low moods, give you back energy, and make it easier to take part in daily life again.

Anxiety Disorders

Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety can make everyday life feel overwhelming. Medications can help regulate stress responses and reduce persistent worry, giving you space to practice coping strategies with more ease.

Bipolar Disorders

For people living with bipolar disorder, we often use mood stabilizers and other medications to help even out the extreme highs and lows. People tell us they have more energy, sleep more soundly, and connect with others more easily, which makes everyday life feel a little easier to handle.

Insomnia

Sleep is essential for mental health. Our psychiatrists can recommend medications that support restful sleep while monitoring for side effects, helping you wake up feeling more refreshed and ready to take on the day.

PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder can affect mood, sleep, and focus. Medication management can help reduce intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and hyperarousal, allowing therapy and coping strategies to work more effectively.

ADHD

For people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, the right medications can help with focus and managing impulses. These changes make day-to-day tasks at work, school, or home feel more manageable and less stressful.

OCD

Obsessive-compulsive disorder can feel overwhelming, but medications can reduce intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors, giving you the mental space to apply behavioral strategies and live more freely.
